“Pastor and his son support ALS awareness by jogging through Georgia and South Carolina To Save The Life of a Civil Rights Hero”:
Dr. Franklyn V. Beckles Jr., and his son Christian Beckles ran in a marathon effort with an encore to raise awareness in the fight against Lou Gehrig’s disease across two states! Also, known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS the disease is a progressive neurodegenerative one that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord, according to the ALS Association’s website.
Dr. Beckles and his son ran through Highway 1 on foot Monday beginning around 6 a.m. They jogged from Red Lobster in downtown Augusta to the Aiken Standard building, about 70 miles. Dr. Beckles, the pastor and director of the Beckles Christian Academy, said his father is suffering from ALS after being diagnosed about two years ago. Rev. Franklyn Beckles Sr. set up Aiken Academy Education Center in the 1980s. The center is now being operated by his son and grandson, who said the prestigious school helps students with behavioral problems and who have dropped out of school.
“My father has been a long-standing pioneer in the Aiken area,” Dr. Beckles said. “I’m hoping this will inspire more people to donate money for this worthy cause that has impacted so many families, including mine.”
